Singer, songwriter and producer G.E.M. has recently etched her name in history, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing tour by a female artist of all time, surpassing icons like the Kpop girl group BLACKPINK and the "Queen of Pop" Madonna.
The Grammy Awards' official website published an article titled "12 Artists Helping Mandopop Become The Next Global Genre" earlier, noting that the 33-year-old singer's cumulative tour earnings have reached US$424 million (approximately HK$3.3 billion) by March this year.
G.E.M. becomes Asia's first on the list
Following the ongoing "I Am Gloria World Tour", which has drawn more than three million attendees across London, the United States, Canada and Singapore, she was recently named the only Asian and Chinese singer in the top five for her impressive revenues for global concerts.
According to records, the current top three highest-grossing tours for female artists are all led by American singers.
Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour" (2023-2024) tops the list at US$2.07 billion (about HK$1.56 billion), followed by Pink's "Summer Carnival Tour" (2023-2024) at US$584 million (about HK$4.55billion), and Beyoncé's "Renaissance World Tour" (2023-2024) at US$579 million (about HK$4.52 billion).
Meanwhile, G.E.M.'s world tour revenue has surpassed Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet Tour" (2008-2009) and BLACKPINK's "Born Pink Tour."
Grammy's article also highlighted G.E.M.'s single "Light Years Away", a song for the film "Passengers," which has become the most-viewed music video by a Chinese singer on YouTube and garnered over 290 million views.
First female singer at Kai Tak Sports Park: rumors
G.E.M. recently announced the fifth phase of her "I Am Gloria World Tour" in mainland and Hong Kong, with over 130 concerts planned.
The announcement has sparked rumors of her returning to Hong Kong for a concert this August, with speculation that she may perform at Kai Tak Sports Park, potentially becoming the first female artist to hold a solo concert at the Park.
Controversies amid growing fame
Despite her success, G.E.M. faced challenges during her early career, notably criticizing the fairness of the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation 2012.
Her statement called for the organizers to promote good music and stand with the goal responsibly, or else the impact of awards would diminish due to the increasing number of ceremonies, which led to backlash from the industry.
Local singer Jenny Tseng also commented on G.E.M.'s perceived aloofness, and G.E.M. later publicly apologized and expressed her desire to collaborate with Tseng in the future.
