The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on July 15 (U.S. time).
While Severance led the contenders with 27 nominations, the Korean sensation Squid Game Season 2 was notably absent from the list, receiving no nominations despite its record-breaking global viewership.
Squid Game Season 2 premiered late last year, quickly breaking Netflix records with 68 million views in its debut week and reaching a total of 192 million views to date. It currently stands as the second most-watched non-English TV series in Netflix history, following only Squid Game Season 3.
Despite its popularity, mixed critical reception may have contributed to its complete omission from this year’s Emmy nominations.
Severance, a thriller delayed by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, made a powerful comeback in January with widespread acclaim. Trailing behind were HBO Max’s The Penguin from the Batman Universe with 24 nominations, and both The Studio and The White Lotus with 23 nominations each.
In terms of network totals, HBO and Max reclaimed the top position with 142 total nominations, while Netflix slipped to second with 120.
This year’s Emmy nominations also came with several surprises. Among them, 15-year-old Owen Cooper made history as the youngest-ever nominee for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited/Anthology Series or TV Movie, earning the nod for his breakout role in Adolescence.
Meanwhile, Harrison Ford, at 83, received his first-ever Emmy nomination, recognized for his performance in Shrinking in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category.
