One thing that Japanese and Hong Kong homes have in common is a lack of space. Every piece of furniture has to justify its footprint.
So it makes sense to get long-lasting furniture that can see you through the years and adapt according to your changing needs - such as Doto Store's new 6-Way and 6-Way Mini series (from HK$6,280 depending on choice of wood).
Inspired by the "small unit" of Japan's 1LDK apartments (one-bedroom apartments), the 6-Way is made to fit into our modern lifestyle.
As its name implies, the simple bench with one shelf can serve six functions: bench, TV cabinet, shoe rack, footrest or bookcase when placed horizontally and work table when placed upright. It can withstand up to 260 kilograms.
Doto Store worked with local deejay Jim Yan for the 6-Way series. The Japanese furniture brand, co-founded by Hongkonger Oliver Tse and Yamagami Yuichiro, aims to promote stores selling products 100 percent made in Hokkaido. Yuichiro's family has worked in carpentry for three generations.
The brand aims to share Japanese craftsmanship with the world. Made from centuries-old trees in Hokkaido, the designs strike a considered balance between tradition and modernity.
Everything is made from scratch so buyers can pick the type of wood they want: nara, walnut, maple, cherry or the special Hokkaido tamo ash.
You can check out the 6-Way at Doto Stores's pop-up at Belowground in Landmark Atrium from now until October 23.
Other pieces on display at the pop-up are the JDF21 Black Series side table, available in Hong Kong for the first time as well as furniture by Hokkaido-based Yamagami Mokko.
The tiny company, with fewer than 20 employees, has over 70 years of history in woodworking and was tasked with making tamo ash medal cases for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
