Shenzhen Bay customs officers have intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle 1.3 grams of cannabis concealed inside a chewing gum container, the General Administration of Customs announced on Tuesday.
The male passenger, wearing shorts, entered the customs inspection area without declaring any prohibited items during routine screening at the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint. Officers discovered green plant material emitting a strong pungent odor from his gum container.
Laboratory testing confirmed the substance contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis. The case has been transferred to customs anti-smuggling authorities for criminal investigation.
"Cannabis remains a controlled narcotic drug in China," customs officials reminded the public. "Regardless of quantity, smuggling, trafficking, transporting or manufacturing narcotics will result in criminal liability and punishment under relevant regulations."
