Shenzhen’s Luohu district has introduced a high-tech solution to tackle illegal smoking in public restrooms. At Shuibei International Center and Shuibei Golden Plaza, restroom cubicles have been fitted with smart glass panels that instantly turn transparent when smoke is detected.
Under normal circumstances, the panels remain frosted, ensuring privacy for users. However, if someone lights up inside a cubicle, embedded smoke sensors trigger the glass to switch to clear, exposing the smoker to anyone outside. Warning signs reading “Smoking Triggers Transparent Mode” are prominently displayed on each door.
According to sources, the system was introduced in August 2025 to curb smokers who hide in restroom cubicles, making enforcement difficult. The smart glass doors were installed to deter violations and improve restroom management.
The innovative measure has since drawn widespread praise online. Netizens applauded the malls for leveraging technology to crack down on rule-breaking and protect the public from second-hand smoke, with many calling for the solution to be rolled out nationwide.
Observers noted that smokers caught in the act are effectively put “on display,” creating a strong deterrent effect while significantly easing enforcement efforts in public restrooms.
