A mainland university student has been expelled for "improper behavior" after the former esports player Danylo "Zeus" Teslenko shared details of their intimate encounter online.
The drama unfolded last December during Zeus's visit to Shanghai for an exhibition tournament, where he shared intimate details of his encounter with a 21-year-old Chinese female student on social media.
The 37-year-old married Ukrainian, known for his mastery in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), revealed that the student had accompanied him back to the hotel, posting intimate photos of the young woman and their interactions, which quickly drew widespread attention.
The student's identity was soon uncovered by online users, who identified her as a student at Dalian Polytechnic University with the surname Li.
University announces expulsion of Li
Seven months later, the Dalian Polytechnic University issued a public statement on July 8, stating that Li would be expelled owing to the "detrimental effects" of her misconduct on December 16, 2024.
The university cited regulations that penalize "improper relationships with foreigners that harm the nation's dignity and the school's reputation," adding Li has the right to appeal the decision within 60 days of the announcement.
Firestorm over school decision
The university's decision has sparked heated discussions online. Some argue that Li's actions compromised both the institution's and the country's image, while others believe that universities should not interfere in the personal lives of adult students.
In response to media inquiries, lawyer Fu from Henan Zejin Law Firm commented that the issue is whether the university has the authority to judge a student's private life when no laws were broken.
Fu further questioned the severity of the punishment, especially when Zeus publicly flaunted intimate images without facing any legal consequences, leaving the student to bear the brunt of the backlash for being publicly identified.
