Opera Hong Kong will present a bold new interpretation of Georges Bizet’s classic opera Carmen this May, relocating the timeless story of passion and fate to the vibrant streets of 1970s Hong Kong.
The new production, staged as part of the French May Arts Festival, will run from May 7 to May 10, 2026 at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Though the story of Carmen is traditionally set in Spain, the opera is based on a novella by French writer Prosper Mérimée, and the production highlights that cultural connection with a cast featuring predominantly French principal singers.
A new setting inspired by Hong Kong’s transformation
For this production, the drama unfolds against the backdrop of Hong Kong in the 1970s, a period marked by rapid economic growth, cultural exchange and social change.
The opera’s four acts will guide audiences through settings inspired by some of the city’s recognizable locations, offering a nostalgic glimpse of an era when Hong Kong was transforming into an international metropolis.
Producer Warren Mok said the story’s emotional intensity fits naturally with the energy of that period.
“The story of Carmen is one of intense emotions and human connections, themes that align beautifully with Hong Kong’s dynamic spirit in the 1970s,” he said. “By reimagining Carmen in this unique setting, we hope to bring a production that is both fresh and timeless to our audiences.”
A timeless opera of love and fate
First premiered in 1875, Carmen has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. Its blend of French lyricism and Spanish passion, combined with Bizet’s memorable melodies, continues to captivate audiences across generations.
The story centers on Don José, a soldier who abandons his career, family and sense of duty for a consuming love affair with the fiercely independent Carmen. As his obsession deepens and jealousy grows, he finds himself torn between Carmen and his loyal childhood companion Micaëla, setting the stage for a tragic finale.
Among the opera’s most famous musical moments are the Habanera and the Toreador Song, melodies that have become instantly recognizable even to those unfamiliar with opera.
Returning creative collaboration
The production also marks the second collaboration between Opera Hong Kong and director Jia Ding, following their acclaimed staging of Puccini’s Turandot in 2024.
Known for blending traditional operatic storytelling with contemporary visual elements, Jia Ding brings a distinctive artistic vision to the production.
The creative team will be joined by an international cast portraying the central roles of Carmen, Don José, Micaëla and Escamillo, while Franck Colombier will lead the musical performance.
The production will feature the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra, the Opera Hong Kong Chorus, and the Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus, bringing Bizet’s dramatic score to life on stage.
