The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra is set to present the city two contrasting programs that place the spotlight firmly on international soloists, moving from the cinematic world of John Williams to the Romantic virtuosity of Franz Liszt.
At the end of January, the orchestra welcomes back legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter for two evenings devoted entirely to the music of John Williams.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential violinists of her generation, Mutter brings to Hong Kong a program that bridges the concert hall and the cinema, featuring themes from Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Harry Potter. The centerpiece is Williams’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a work written specifically for her, underscoring a long-standing artistic collaboration between composer and performer.
The performances, on January 29 and 30, will be led by conductor Lina González-Granados, marking her debut with the HK Phil. Her presence adds another layer to the program, which places film music within a symphonic context rather than treating it as a novelty.

In February, the focus shifts to the piano, as Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski returns to the HK Phil stage to perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
Known for combining technical command with expressive clarity, Trpčeski tackles a score that demands both virtuosity and restraint, offering a contrast to the more overtly dramatic gestures often associated with Liszt.
The concert on February 12 also marks the Hong Kong debut of Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan, who will lead the orchestra in a series of works by Ravel, including Valses nobles et sentimentales, Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2, and La valse. The HK Phil Chorus will join the orchestra for Daphnis et Chloé, bringing a fuller palette to a programme rooted in color, rhythm, and orchestral texture.
