Japan PM Takaichi plans Cabinet reshuffle for September 16

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is arranging to reshuffle her Cabinet and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's executive lineup as early as September 16, Kyodo News reported on Monday, citing government sources.

The move is aimed at giving the administration time to prepare for an extraordinary parliamentary session planned for early October. Takaichi is expected to seek authorization from the party's executive committee on September 15.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi are likely to remain in their posts. Takaichi is also expected to retain former Prime Minister Taro Aso as party vice president and Shunichi Suzuki as secretary general.

The reshuffle follows Cabinet approval of a tax reform package to cut the consumption tax on food and beverages from 8 per cent to 1 per cent for two years starting next April.

The changes will be Takaichi's first Cabinet reshuffle since she took office in October 2025.
