US embassy employee found dead in Yangon hotel, Thai woman detained

A male employee of the US embassy in Myanmar was found dead about two weeks ago at a long-stay apartment hotel in Yangon, with local police treating the case as a homicide and detaining a Thai woman for questioning, according to diplomatic sources.

The body was discovered at Sakura Residence & Hotel, about 1.5 kilometres from the US embassy and a common residence for diplomats, businesspeople and foreign visitors, three unnamed US diplomatic sources told media on Thursday.

The US State Department confirmed the death of a US government employee assigned to the Yangon embassy but said it had no further information to provide out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones. It did not disclose the victim's name, cause of death or case details.

Thailand's foreign ministry said it had provided consular assistance to the detained woman and notified her family, but declined further comment.
