Drainage hose detaches at Fanling footbridge amid amber rainstorm, water cascades like waterfall

A drainage hose at the Lung Yeuk Tau interchange circular footbridge in Fanling detached during heavy rain on Wednesday night, sending water cascading from the bridge like a waterfall, as an amber rainstorm warning brought flooding to multiple areas across the northern New Territories.

Workers rushed to the scene to repair the detached hose, which was originally designed to channel rainwater from the bridge roof to the ground. No injuries were reported.

The footbridge, which opened in mid-April, is the world's first pedestrian bridge built using S960 domestic ultra-high-strength steel.

The amber rainstorm warning was issued at 9pm, with hourly rainfall in the northern New Territories at one point expected to exceed 100 millimetres. Flooding was reported at car parks in Tai Ping Estate and Choi Yuen Estate in Sheung Shui, with water reaching calf-deep in some areas. Roads near Sheung Shui Centre were also submerged.
