Hong Kong will host more national, regional, and world-class events following the National Games, while any potential bid for the Olympic Games will be determined at the national level, said Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui.
The remarks were made during the Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports' policy briefing at the Legislative Council on Tuesday (Jan 27).
The sports chief noted that during discussions for the National Games, the General Administration of Sport of China agreed that cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau has great potential.
Law noted that major sporting events require significant time to organize, using the two years of intensive preparation for the National Games as an example. She pledged that Hong Kong will host more events of different scales, as well as assist athletes in achieving better results on world ranking platforms and preparing for the Asian Games this year.
Thomas Bach, honorary president for life of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), previously stated that Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area have the potential and resources to bid for the Olympic Games.
However, Law emphasized that bidding for the Olympics is a national-level act and decision, and that Hong Kong has no plans to focus on conducting a related study.
Separately, Law mentioned that "My Life as McDull Stage Show" and "Art Tech Dance Drama: Storm Clouds Realm of Infinite" were selected for the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme last December.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said the scheme aims to nurture long-running, world-class performing arts productions and international cultural brands that represent Hong Kong.
Law expressed hope that staging long-running performances will rekindle public interest in well-known local intellectual property and attract tourists, to achieve an effect similar to "The Impossible Trial- a musical" that toured nationwide.
