A record-breaking team of over 800 Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) runners joined the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2026 this morning, celebrating the University’s 70th anniversary with spirit and solidarity.
The team, composed of staff, students, and alumni, also competed in the event’s inaugural “University Challenge Cup,” securing a podium finish as the 2nd runner-up.
Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, was present to cheer for the runners.
“As we celebrate HKBU’s 70th anniversary, this year’s Hong Kong Marathon provides a perfect stage to showcase our community spirit in the pursuit of excellence and breakthroughs,” said Wong.
He expressed hope that this passion would inspire all members of the university to further elevate research and contribute innovative solutions to society.
Running alongside the team in the University Challenge Cup was Alex Wai Ping-kong, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.
“This year, we have the largest HKBU Marathon Team ever, which makes this 70th-anniversary year even more memorable,” said Wai.
He added that witnessing the camaraderie among runners and supporters, along with the energetic performances by a student cheerleading squad, showcased a unity that would undoubtedly propel HKBU toward new milestones.
In preparation for the marathon, the university organised structured training programmes led by professional coaches starting in November last year.
Aside from sponsoring the entry fee, each participant received an exclusive runner's pack with a commemorative windbreaker, running shirt, and essential gear.
Notably, a dedicated support booth was also set up today at the Victoria Park handball court, where a professional team of Chinese medicine practitioners and students from the School of Chinese Medicine offered on-site physical assessments and post-race recovery advice to safeguard runners’ well-being.
