The Hong Kong government has strongly condemned media reports about the detention conditions of Jimmy Lai, stating he has been receiving appropriate medical care and treatment consistent with other detainees.
A government spokesman on Tuesday criticized certain media including Agence France-Presse for what it called fact-twisting reports concerning Lai's case under the Hong Kong National Security Law. The government said such reports attempt to mislead the public and smear Hong Kong's rule of law.
"The Correctional Services Department handles the custodial arrangements for Lai Chee-ying in the same way as other persons-in-custody," the spokesman said, noting Lai's legal representatives have clarified he receives appropriate care. "The false reports by relevant media have no factual basis at all."
The government emphasized that medical services for detainees are provided by the Department of Health and Hospital Authority, with professional staff offering equal treatment. During an August court hearing, Lai's senior counsel reportedly acknowledged daily medical checkups without complaint, and the court commended correctional services.
Regarding Lai's separation from other prisoners, authorities stated this arrangement was made at his own request under legal provisions aimed at ensuring personal safety.
The spokesman said media attempts to comment on ongoing legal proceedings could constitute interfering with judicial independence, adding such acts must be "sternly denounced to set the record straight."
