China's ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, noted the importance of cherishing the current positive trend in China-US relations, warning that unnecessary complications could create new obstacles.
In a video speech at the annual “US-China Hong Kong Forum 2025” on Monday (Nov 17), Xie said President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump have spoken three times, exchanged several letters, and met recently in South Korea to recalibrate Sino-US relations.
He said the meeting marks a "new historical starting point" with immediate tasks including effective management and implementation of their consensus to lay a firm foundation for China-US relations and for the benefit of both countries and the world.
"It is important to keep to the direction set by our Presidents and faithfully implement the consensus reached during their meeting," Xie added.
He stated that the current stabilizing momentum has not come easily and should be doubly cherished. "It is important to avoid flip-flopping, causing any new disruption, or taking one step forward but then retreating half or even two steps backward, which would only cause new difficulties and obstacles for bilateral relations."
The ambassador said there is "vast room" for China-US cooperation in areas such as green development, artificial intelligence, digital economy, health, tourism and agriculture as China embarks on a new journey during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
With China’s middle-income group set to exceed 800 million in the coming decade or so, the consumer market is taking shape at a faster pace to bring huge opportunities like never before to the US and the entire world.
"China and the U.S. should make the list of partnership longer, and the cake of cooperation bigger," Xie noted. "Going forward, no matter how the situation may evolve, the historical trend of win-win cooperation between China and the United States will not change."
This year’s “US-China Hong Kong Forum,” themed “Circles for Peace,” included guests from China, the US, Germany, India, Singapore, and others, who explored a range of topics, including AI technology, geopolitics, and the influence of youth leaders.
Among those attending the forum was Neil Bush, son of the late US President George H.W. Bush and also the chairman of the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations, who criticized Trump's tariff policies, saying they severely damage the global order.
He said the risk lies with the United States, which may continue to demonize China, and make China be an existential threat to our freedoms, to our economy, to our national security.
He said if the American public opinion gets riled up, there is a risk of conflict.
The grandson of the late US president Richard Nixon, Christopher Nixon Cox, said the trade wars are something that needs to be managed between the two countries and thinks that the two leaders understand both positions very well and the best interests are to create a win-win for both countries.
