CHP investigates severe pediatric EV infection with meningitis complications case

A 10-year-old girl suffered from meningitis after being infected with severe pediatric enterovirus (EV) and remains hospitalized at the Accident and Emergency Department at United Christian Hospital.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said the girl, with good past health, attended the A&E last Tuesday (Jun 17) due to fever, headache and vomiting.

Her cerebrospinal fluid sample tested positive for enterovirus, and she was later diagnosed with meningitis.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the patient did not travel outside the city during the incubation period. Her household contacts have yet to develop symptoms, as the CHP continues investigations. 

EV infection is transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges. Children suffering from EV infection should stay at home and avoid contact with other children until they have recovered. 

The Centre reminded the public to maintain hand, personal and environmental hygiene.
