Domestic travel during China’s Labor Day holiday is expected to rise by around 4.5 percent year-on-year to about 1.42 billion trips, according to the Ministry of Transport.
By comparison, data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics in January shows the country’s population stood at 1.41 billion in 2024.
On the first day alone, total inter-regional travel is expected to reach 340.95 million trips, up 60 percent from the previous month and an 8 percent year-on-year rise, the ministry said.
The Labor Day "golden week" holiday runs from May 1 to 5.
Meanwhile, as of 2pm on May 1, China's Labor Day box office surpassed 100 million yuan (HK$106.69 million), with The Dumpling Queen topping the holiday chart by 20 million yuan, according to the movie-ticketing platform Maoyan.
The film is based on the life of Chong Kin-wo, creator of the popular Wan Chai Ferry brand of dumplings.
