Manfred Man Ka-leung is bullish about Patch Of Cosmo’s chances in Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Mile but is refusing to look beyond the opening leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series.
Man produced one of the training performances of the season when Patch Of Cosmo returned from a 315-day absence due to a tendon injury to win first-up, carrying top weight of 135 pounds in a Class 3 mile.
That run has the gelding heading into the Classic Mile fitter and emerging as a left-field contender capable of challenging the consensus top trio of Invincible Ibis, Little Paradise, and Sagacious Life.
“That was a good win and a great ride by Zac Purton,” Man said. “We chose the right race for him. We were originally thinking about the four-year-old mile a week earlier, but that looked very tough with Invincible Ibis and Beauty Bolt.”
Purton has opted to ride Sagacious Life, leaving Matthew Chadwick to partner Patch Of Cosmo on Sunday.
The Classic Mile is followed by the 1,800m Hong Kong Classic Cup and the 2,000m BMW Hong Kong Derby but Man’s focus remains narrow.
“We don’t look beyond this race,” he said. “Let’s see what he can do.”
Patch Of Cosmo’s comeback victory was made more notable by his condition. He raced at 1,291 pounds – 49 pounds heavier than his previous racing weight in March 2025.
“He was a little fat,” Man said. “We just needed to keep him ticking over since then. He should improve.”
Man will also saddle Circuit Grand Slam, an Irish import who won first-up and has been only fair since.
“This is a good test for him,” Man said. “But Patch Of Cosmo is my best chance.”
