UK warns dual nationals may not receive consular help in HK

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Hong Kong, warning that dual nationals — including holders of British citizen passports or British National (Overseas) passports — may not receive consular assistance upon entering the city.

In an update released on Thursday (Dec 11), the Foreign Office noted that Hong Kong does not recognize dual nationality. Individuals who enter Hong Kong using a British citizen passport or a BN(O) passport may still be regarded as Chinese nationals by local authorities if they also hold Chinese nationality.

“If this is the case, the British Consulate-General may not be able to offer you consular help,” the advisory stated.

The Foreign Office added that individuals who have formally renounced their Chinese nationality should carry relevant documentation as proof when traveling to Hong Kong.
