The China Tennis Tour 1000 CCB (Asia) Hong Kong Open 2025 kicked off on Sunday at Victoria Park, launching a weeklong competition that has drawn more than 150 players from across the nation.
Athletes will battle in men’s and women’s singles and doubles for a total prize pool of 800,000 yuan.
At the opening ceremony, organizer representative Eric Fok Kai-shan said the tournament, now in its third consecutive year in Hong Kong, highlights the city’s ability to host major sporting events and underscores its role as a window to the world.
He noted that several medalists from the recent National Games are competing, which he hopes will sustain the momentum of sports enthusiasm.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
One of the biggest storylines is the return of former Chinese women’s tennis star Wang Qiang, once ranked No. 12 in the WTA and a two-time Asian Games singles gold medalist. Her comeback in Hong Kong is expected to showcase her experience and resilience. Rising contender Liu Fangzhou, who swept both singles and doubles titles at the CTA1000 Huzhou stop earlier this year, enters in strong form.
On the men’s side, 2023 CTA Finals champion Te Rigele is set to bring his power and pace to the hard courts, while last year’s Hong Kong champion Liu Shaoyun returns to defend his title.
Doubles specialist Xiao Linang, also a 2023 CTA Finals winner, is anticipated to demonstrate his dominance again.
