HK’s next domestic workforce majority

Indonesia’s Consul General in Hong Kong, Yul Edison, has assured that the supply of domestic helpers from Indonesia remains strong and may soon surpass their Filipino counterparts.

In 2024, Hong Kong hosted 368,000 foreign domestic helpers, with 42 percent from Indonesia and 55 percent from the Philippines. Edison noted that of the 183,000 Indonesians in Hong Kong, 90 percent work as domestic helpers, with 1,000 new arrivals monthly. Over the past five years, 75 percent of Indonesia’s helpers from 28 provinces have chosen Hong Kong.

The consulate supports this workforce through welcome and exit programs. “For our domestic helpers, Hong Kong is just like their second home,” he said. Edison also highlighted a rise in Indonesian students, increasing from 600 in 2023 to 1,000 in 2024, with many studying data science and bioengineering. Most secure jobs before graduation.

He addressed past Indonesian misconceptions that Hong Kong universities taught mainly in Cantonese, saying this perception is shifting as more Indonesians choose Hong Kong for higher education.
