National security is everyone's responsibility. The Hong Kong National Security Law and Safeguarding National Security Ordinance (SNSO) are an important milestone under Hong Kong’s "One Country, Two Systems" policy. To promote awareness in national security, NStory short video competition, organized by the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force, held its award presentation ceremony at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 14 July.

The competition, divided into primary, junior secondary and senior secondary school categories, attracted 277 students from 43 primary and secondary schools. Entries were accepted starting from January this year and more than 100 entries were received, all of which showed excellent narrative and camera skills to bring out the importance of national security.

Coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the promulgation and implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force, the competition was organized by the National Security Department and co-organized by the Public Relations Wing of the Hong Kong Police Force (Junior Police Call), the Police Filming Club, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers (HKFEW) and Sing Tao News Corporation to promote national security education and showcase how national security is closely related to daily life.

Officiating guests at the award presentation ceremony included the Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming, Deputy Commissioner of Police (National Security) Andrew Kan Kai-yan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Keith Yip Wan-lung, Hong Kong Legislative Council member and Vice-President of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers Tang Fei, and Honorary Vice-President of the Police Filming Club Lee Lik-chi.

During the award presentation ceremony, Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming reiterated that the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the SNSO is one of the core tasks of the Hong Kong Police Force. He explained that criminals endangering national security should face consequences, stressing that the National Security Law is only aimed at a small number of criminals and with no impact on the vast majority of law-abiding citizens in Hong Kong. He also said that national security is akin to home security, and protecting our homes is the civic responsibility of every citizen.

Chow added that after attending the award presentation ceremony, students should bring home not only awards and joy, but also the importance of national security which is closely related to their lives, and remember to spread this important message to their families and friends. He emphasized that "National security is everyone's responsibility" is not merely a slogan but can be integrated into our daily lives.

The judging panel included Legislative Councillor Tang Fei and renowned director Lee Lik-chi. Based on a set of judging criteria, awards for the first, second, third and merit awards were presented. The judging panel commended participants for their creativity and distinct characteristics which made a lasting impression on the jury. Their outstanding performances were also unanimously affirmed by the jury.

Tang Fei said that he was happy to see that students had the opportunity to learn and promote national security from multiple perspectives. He was pleased to see so many creative and interesting short videos. He thanked and affirmed all the teachers for their efforts, and hoped that the education sector could make good use of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence not only to teach classroom knowledge but also national security to students in a vivid and interesting way so as to create more effective results.

Meanwhile, Lee Lik-chi shared the key points of national security education as well as filming techniques to create short videos and filming, such as the responsibilities of directors and actors, how to use lenses and lighting, and adding subtitles to the videos to increase accessibility of the audience. He also encouraged students to be creative, to boldly pursue and work hard for their dreams.

As for the competition, entries were excellent and competition was intense. The primary school category was won by Pui Kiu Primary School (Technology Safety Team). Their entry, "Satellites Connect You and I; Security Is Protected By Me" recounted how China’s 525 satellites protect technology security and safeguard everyone's daily life. The second and third places were awarded to Tai Po Old Market Public School and Yaumatei Kaifong Association School.

The first prize of the junior secondary school category was Ho Dao College (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen). Their entry "Hidden Risks Lie Behind" reminded the public of the importance of cyber security, the prevention of cyber traps and the correct attitude to use the Internet through daily encounters. The second and third places were won by Diocesan Girls' School (Dream Photography) and Munsang College (PLC).

As for the senior secondary school category, Homantin Government Secondary School (Cyber Defense) was awarded the first prize. Their entry, "Hidden Threats", described how hackers and cybercrimes can take advantage of the situation if one is not alert. The video also pointed out that almost all cyber security cases have one common feature: ignoring data security. Therefore, the public is reminded to take caution, set up firewalls to protect themselves during daily Internet access. The second and third places went to the two participating teams of True Light Girls' College with entries entitled "Cultural Security and Artificial Intelligence Security" and "Cyber Security".

In addition, True Light Girls' College won "The School with the Most Active Participation Award". As for "My Favorite Short Video Award" of each category, opened for public voting for one month, went to the Church of Christ in China Kei Wai Primary School, Ho Dao College (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) and Mu Kuang English School. Together with the above awards, a total of 52 awards were presented to winning schools, teachers and students.
