The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced today (July 2) the appointment of Anthony Lau Chun-hon as its new Executive Director, effective August 4. The seasoned tourism professional will succeed the outgoing Dane Cheng Ting-yat, marking his second tenure at the helm of the city's tourism promotion body after serving from 2007 to 2019.
Currently the Director of the Hong Kong Talent Engage office, Lau will depart his post on August 1, with the Labour and Welfare Bureau launching a recruitment campaign for his replacement today.
His return to HKTB reunites him with Chairman Peter Lam Kin-ngok, recreating the partnership that previously drove Hong Kong's tourism promotion efforts.
A passionate return
Sources reveal Lau recently informed friends of his decision to rejoin HKTB before the official announcement, expressing that tourism holds "a special place in both his career and heart."
He shared his eagerness "to make greater contributions to tourism development" and thanked friends for their enduring guidance and support, looking forward to renewed collaborations.
Leadership transition
HKTB Chairman Peter Lam extended gratitude to outgoing Executive Director Cheng for his six years of leadership, particularly for steering the organization through pandemic challenges, encouraging locals to rediscover their city.
Post-pandemic, Cheng spearheaded the revival of major events and launched the innovative "Hello Hong Kong" campaign to reignite tourism, he noted.
Lam, meanwhile, welcomed Lau's return, citing his extensive tourism and marketing expertise coupled with outstanding leadership skills as ideal qualifications for the role.
He expressed confidence Lau would effectively implement the "Development Blueprint for Hong Kong's Tourism Industry 2.0," collaborating with industry stakeholders to elevate Hong Kong's status as a world-class destination with diversified experiences.
Proven track record
During his previous 12-year tenure, Lau pioneered innovative marketing strategies that capitalized on tourism trends while maintaining close partnerships with industry players.
After departing HKTB in July 2019, he assumed leadership of the Hong Kong Talent Engage office in October 2023.
The reunion with Chairman Lam, who previously led HKTB from 2013-2019 before returning in April this year, promises to rekindle their successful partnership in promoting Hong Kong's tourism industry.
