While sources suggested that Dane Cheng Ting-yat, the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), is likely to wrap up his five-year term by the year-end, the Board has launched a global recruitment advertisement online.
According to the Tourism Board's 2023/24 annual report, the Executive Director's basic annual salary in 2024 is approximately HK$5.65 million.
Taking into account discretionary performance pay, retirement benefits, contract gratuities, and other allowances, total remuneration in 2024 was around HK$7.39 million, up from approximately HK$6.99 million in 2023.
Applicants with diplomatic leadership abilities
According to the job advertisement on HKTB's official website and networking platform LinkedIn, several key requirements are outlined for applicants.
Those included sound knowledge and understanding of the tourism industry dynamics and related trade ecosystem domestically and globally.
In addition, the HKTB seeks individuals with extensive experience in senior roles that involve engaging with multiple stakeholders, managing media relations, and effectively representing the organization.
Meanwhile, strong marketing acumen, multicultural awareness, and substantial experience in strategic planning, change management, performance enhancement, innovative customer-centric marketing strategies, and risk management are also listed as requirements.
Additionally, the advertisement emphasizes that excellent interpersonal skills, personal influence, and diplomatic leadership abilities are crucial qualities for the position.
The Board encouraged applications and nominations from individuals with diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to advancing Hong Kong's tourist industry.
Challenges during Cheng's term in HKTB
According to reports, Cheng joined Cathay Pacific after graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1986, holding senior positions at head offices in different regions.
Before joining the HKTB, he served as an executive director of Hang Lung Properties from 2017 to 2019.
Appointed Executive Director in October 2019, Cheng officially took office on November 1 of the same year when there was a significant challenge to the tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cheng led the HKTB team in launching local accommodation and staycation offers and initiated the "Hello Hong Kong" promotional campaign after the pandemic.
During his service, Cheng also signed a three-year partnership with Art Basel and collaborated with the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu to strengthen cultural tourism in the city.
