China's first Olympic long-distance running champion Wang Junxia has gained residency in Hong Kong with her daughter through the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme.
The current world record holder in the 3,000-meter run attended a running event in Tamar Park this morning, expressing her gratitude to the government and the profound impression and enthusiasm among citizens in Hong Kong.
Wang also reflected on her enduring ties with the city, recalling her first visit as part of the Chinese Olympians' delegation after winning the women's 5,000-meter event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The 52-year-old stated that the warmth and hospitality of the Hong Kong people left a lasting impression on her, alongside the vibrant and prosperous nature of the city.
Wang also expressed her desire to contribute to the sports industry in the city, adding she will study Cantonese in the future.
Meanwhile, Wang's daughter hopes to represent the city in future competitions.
Clement Woo Kin-man, Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, noted that Wang's athletic achievements are widely recognized, expressing hope that she will share her experience with local athletes.
He added that the government has received over 470,000 applications under various talent schemes since the end of 2022, with more than 310,000 approved and 210,000 talents already having arrived in Hong Kong.
