Terms and Conditions magazine founder Kat Tse tells Yolanda Kei how she wants to raise inclusive voices and share our stories.
As the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Terms and Conditions (T&C) magazine, Kat Tse has carved a niche for herself in the competitive world of fashion and communication. Born in Toronto and raised in Hong Kong, Tse graduated from Northeastern University majoring in Communication with a minor in Fashion Studies.
During her studies, her journey took an unexpected turn when she contracted COVID-19. The illness hit her hard, leaving her struggling to walk and move her arms. "I used to run tracks during high school, but after I got infected, I struggled a lot with my health," she recalled.
This challenging period has been shaped by her passion for fashion and her unwavering resilience in the face of adversity. "While I was having my internships, I realized how cutthroat the competition could be in the fashion and communication industry."
Throughout her journey, Tse has been fortunate to have the support of her university and two incredible mentors, Kiyoko Tsukabayashi and Leanne Blu. They have been instrumental in her growth, providing guidance and encouragement. "Kiyoko and Leanne have shown me the importance of community and support. They are the two women who have empowered me," she shared.
In the face of setbacks, Tse's love for fashion has remained a driving force in her life. She describes her work with T&C magazine as a passion project that has evolved alongside her experiences. "I've learned to connect with people through my journey and my passion for fashion. It's about creating a space where others can share their stories and find solace in the struggles we all face," she explained.
Tse's personal experiences have also shaped her understanding of vulnerability and strength. Her first heartbreak at the age of 16 was a formative moment that led to feelings of anxiety and depression. Rather than shying away from these emotions, she channeled them into her work. "I feel like I've created an editorial heartbreak diary, using fashion and storytelling to express what I was going through. It became a way for me to process my feelings and connect with others who might be experiencing similar struggles," she said.
Her journey has also been about seeking a sense of belonging. Being trilingual has allowed Tse to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds, enriching her understanding of culture and communication. Her time studying in London for eight months was particularly transformative. "While I was recovering from COVID, I spent hours exploring museums and soaking in the city's vibrant culture. Each experience sparked inspiration and reminded me of the beauty and creativity that fashion can embody," she says.
As she continues her work with T&C magazine, she recognizes that her life experiences are not just challenges but vital components of her personal and professional growth. She remains committed to using her voice to connect with others, share her experiences, and empower those around her. "We've just launched our third edition - To Soul Search. It is a beautiful, transformative and masterful piece of creativity filled with heartfelt messages which I hope to touch upon every single reader. I believe that through vulnerability and authenticity, we can create meaningful connections and foster a sense of belonging in an often tumultuous world."
