US Ambassador to China David Perdue said President Xi Jinping has invited US President Donald Trump to visit China in April, while Trump has invited Xi to the United States between August and September.
Perdue disclosed the arrangement in a January 27 interview with Bloomberg in Hong Kong. He stated that China and the United States have largely implemented several consensuses reached during their meeting in Busan last year, covering specific areas like fentanyl and soybean purchases, showing substantial progress in pragmatic cooperation.
He revealed China has fulfilled its soybean purchase commitments, and law enforcement cooperation on combating fentanyl has intensified, including the first-ever joint operation within China. Pondwell described this as reflecting a more operational communication mechanism between the two sides on security and trade.
Regarding overall bilateral relations, Perdue noted interactions have improved across several areas, with a more relaxed atmosphere than before. He believes frequent high-level engagement helps stabilize the relationship and creates space for further cooperation.
Separately, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said China-US relations are in a “very good balance” and revealed Trump and Xi could meet as many as four times in different settings this year. Trump himself said on January 22 that Xi plans to visit the US by the end of 2026.
