The Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom issued a statement urging citizens living there to strengthen safety precautions and take extra steps to avoid losing contact, as it recently received a number of requests for assistance about Chinese nationals who have gone missing or lost contact with their families.
According to the statement released on Monday (May 12), the embassy suggests citizens share their local phone number and address with their families upon arrival in the UK, as well as information for emergency contacts such as friends, classmates, or colleagues.
Additionally, the embassy suggested setting up "code word" system with family members that can be used in case of an emergency, helping to alert family and facilitate timely assistance.
The statement noted that when planning to travel, especially to places with poor phone signals, citizens should let their family or close friends know beforehand.
For families with members living in the UK, the embassy encourage them to keep a detailed list of contact information, not just for their loved ones but also their close contacts.
For parents of Chinese students studying in the UK, it is recommended to save their student ID numbers, academic program details, and contact information for school support services, academic advisors, classmates, roommates, and landlords.
Families should check in regularly with their relatives overseas, keeping an eye on their well-being and whereabouts, according to the statement.
In case of an emergency, families are encouraged to stay calm and report the situation to local police right away. They can also reach out to the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the UK for assistance.
