President Xi 'expressed sympathy' to Trump after shooting: spokesperson

President Xi Jinping expressed his "compassion and sympathy" to Donald Trump on Sunday following an assassination attempt on the former US president during a rally in the United States, Beijing's foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

"China is closely following the situation surrounding the shooting of former President Donald Trump," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

"President Xi Jinping has expressed his condolences to former President Trump," the statement said.
