A former member of the Thai parliament recently fulfilled a personal vow by performing a traditional Thai dance while undressed. The act was in response to the removal of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office.
Amarat Chokepamitkul, the MP of the Move Forward Party (MFP), on June 6 announced via her Facebook her desire for Shinawatra to be removed from her position by 2025.
Chokepamitkul vowed to perform a naked dance in front of a sacred statue upon the fulfillment of this wish.
The wish was actualized when the Constitutional Court mandated Shinawatra's departure from her role last week, concluding that she had significantly breached ethical standards for Thai politicians during a phone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.
The phone call took place amidst a territorial dispute that had heightened border tensions, leading to substantial public criticism. Shinawatra was accused of undermining the Thai military, seeking sympathy from Hun Sen by drawing comparisons to his niece, and proposing to fulfill his requests if it could lead to peace in the border regions. Some Thais speculated that she had aligned herself with Cambodia and sought personal gain from the escalating conflict.
Chokepamitkul decided to honor her commitment and visited a shrine in Nakhon Pathom province on Monday (Sep 1) to conduct the traditional dance in the nude.
The performance occurred within a tent screened with white fabric, and she subsequently shared a video on her Facebook page.
Her followers commended her for adhering to her promise.
