Coravin crafts new durable, elegant wine bottle openers

Oenopiles now have a more elegant and durable accessory from Greg Lambrecht, the inventor of the Coravin Wine Preservation Opener.

The Coravin Model Two, (HK$3,080) with textured grips, is the most classic product in the Coravin family, striking a balance between elegant design and craftsmanship.

Each comes with a needle and two Coravin argon capsules. A one-year warranty applies.

The Coravin Model Two Elite (HK$3,280) performs as well as Model Two, and features different high-end colors including light gold, rose gold, glossy white, candy apple red and piano black.

To use it, a  user simply clamps the opener on to a wine bottle, push it down, and a medical-grade needle with non-stick coating will penetrate the cork without damaging it. Then, 99.9 percent pure argon is injected to pressurize the bottle and replace the wine as it is poured out.

Wine that is remans in bottles can be preserved as long as it is kept in a wine fridge away from sunlight at consistent temperature (12-15 degrees Celsius). The wine must also be stored horizontally so that the cork is in contact with the liquor and kept moist; this is to prevent cracks appearing from dried up corks.

Coravin works on all natural cork-sealed, still wines, including red, white, rosé, and desert.

Coravin recommends a quick, short press to pour out the wine. Each argon capsule can pour up to 15 glasses of wine.

A user injects argon to pressurize the bottle and pour wine, and any excess argon will escape when you tip the bottle back up, with a “hazz” sound. Pressing the trigger long will only lead to wastage of gas and increase the cost of every glass you pour.

All it takes to clean the Coravin is tap water. Let water run into the spout and it flows out from the tip of the needle. Tap dry the surface and let it air dry overnight. Do not use soap nor submerge the system in water. Also it is not dish-washing machine friendly.
