Police received a report from a security guard at Tai On Building in Sai Wan Ho around 11.30pm night after the guard noticed a strange odor coming from one of the units and grew concerned for the occupants’ safety.
Firefighters arrived and, receiving no response, forced entry into the flat. Inside a bedroom, they found the couple lying on a bed. Paramedics pronounced both dead at the scene.
Officers discovered a basin of burnt charcoal in the apartment and recovered a suicide note.
The man, surnamed Chow, was 69, and his wife, surnamed Poon, was 74. Preliminary investigations point to suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Sources indicate the couple had been under severe financial pressure due to debt.
The wife also reportedly suffered from health issues.
Authorities have not ruled out that these combined difficulties led to the tragedy.
The exact cause of death awaits confirmation from a coroner’s examination.
