Two mainland Chinese men have been arrested in connection with a series of pickpocketing cases across Hong Kong, in which stolen credit cards were used for overseas online purchases totaling about HK$700,000. The largest single transaction amounted to HK$110,000.
Police apprehended the suspects in North Point on Monday following investigations into 12 reported thefts between September and December last year.
The two men, aged 31 and 43, are two-way exit permit holders. They are suspected of involvement in 12 pickpocketing cases in North Point, Quarry Bay, and Central.
The total value of stolen property amounted to about HK$730,000, including HK$30,000 in cash and HK$700,000 in fraudulent credit card transactions.
Investigations revealed that the stolen credit cards were used for overseas online shopping, including transactions made in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, with most purchases involving high-value items.
Police believe the suspects are linked to an organized theft group and are continuing their investigation.
A police spokesman said multiple reports had been received over the past three months involving thefts on streets and public transport, where victims’ wallets containing documents, cash, and credit cards were stolen from handbags or backpacks.
In many cases, by the time victims realized their belongings were missing, their credit cards had already been used for online purchases within a short period.
After reviewing CCTV footage, police identified two suspects. Officers from the Eastern Police District then carried out anti-theft operations on Monday in busy areas and known crime black spots.
During the operation, officers spotted the suspects near King’s Road in North Point. The two men were acting suspiciously and appeared to be searching for potential targets. Police intercepted and arrested them before they could flee.
Investigations indicate that such pickpocketing cases often occur in crowded places, where offenders target individuals—particularly those shopping alone—who carry handbags or backpacks with unzipped compartments. The thefts typically take place when victims are distracted.
The two men remain in custody for further investigation.
Police reminded the public that with the Lunar New Year approaching, people should remain vigilant in crowded areas, keep personal belongings secure, and ensure bags are fully zipped.
Anyone who suspects their credit card has been stolen or detects unauthorized transactions should contact their bank immediately and report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
