A massive flock of over 100 wild pigeons has taken over a staircase landing on a pedestrian footbridge near Central Market, creating a striking yet alarming scene that has left many Hong Kong residents horrified and avoiding the area.
Photos and videos shared on social media show the pigeons densely packed along the steps, blocking the passage and prompting widespread comments about the risk of being hit by droppings.
Netizens described the sight as terrifying, disgusting, and skin-crawling, with several saying they now dodge the spot entirely or run through nearby areas to escape the birds.
Many reported past experiences of being splattered with pigeon droppings at the location or nearby, leaving them with lasting unease.
Some also noted pigeons flying low onto roads, posing traffic hazards.
The problem is widely blamed on illegal feeding, as the birds appear unusually tame, overweight, and unafraid of people.
Locals pointed out that the pigeons have grown so plump they resemble chickens, and the issue extends into the market itself, where droppings frequently fall from overhead perches.
The phenomenon highlights ongoing challenges despite stricter laws introduced in August 2024, which expanded the ban on feeding wild pigeons, raised maximum penalties to a HK$100,000 fine and one year in jail, and added a fixed penalty of HK$5,000.
