A 49-year-old mainland male inmate has been charged with manslaughter following the alleged assault of his cellmate, which resulted in the latter's death on September 19 at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, police announced on Thursday.

Police mentioned that the 49-year-old had been charged with one count of manslaughter after investigation, and the case scheduled to be mentioned at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on Friday (Sep 26).
He allegedly assaulted his 80-year-old cellmate in the early hours on September 19 , causing severe head injuries that led to the latter's death.
Both individuals had been sentenced to imprisonment in September this year. The 80-year-old was serving time for theft, while the 49-year-old was imprisoned for the offence of landing in Hong Kong unlawfully and remaining without the authorization of the Director of Immigration.
