Amber rainstorm upgraded to red as heavy thundershowers hit HK

Nearly 90,000 live rats across Hong Kong were captured by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department over the last year, a 40 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Since last year, the FEHD has fully adopted thermal imaging cameras, supplemented by artificial intelligence technology, to conduct territory-wide rodent activity surveys every six months, replacing the traditional method of analysing rodent infestations through rat bait consumption signs.
The devices operate from 7pm to 7am over three consecutive days in surveyed areas, capturing heat signatures that help identify rodent pathways and active hours.
According to FEHD’s Chief Hygiene Supervisor for Tsuen Wan, So Yeung-fung, the thermal images provide clear evidence of rodent presence and behavior, enabling targeted and efficient pest control strategies.
For instance, in the Hau Tei Square area of Tsuen Wan, the number of captured rats surged to around 270 last year—a threefold increase from approximately 89 in 2023.
Beyond technological upgrades, the FEHD has launched a trial program that allows eligible restaurants to place large waste bins in adjacent back lanes for temporary garbage storage.
Regular inspections ensure proper waste disposal, and illegal dumping or clutter accumulation is strictly penalized.
Community involvement is also a key aspect of the renewed anti-rodent drive.
The FEHD has introduced an "Anti-rodent Charter," encouraging housing estates to participate in sustained pest control efforts. Residential complexes like Tsuen Wan Plaza have received free technical support and guidance after signing the charter.
Property management staff attend FEHD-led workshops to stay updated on rodent prevention techniques and exchange best practices.
To enhance street cleanliness, the department has introduced pressure washer surface cleaners that efficiently remove stains with less water and effort.
One of the service contractors, Chu Chui-yin, has praised the new equipment for its effectiveness and ease of use compared to traditional cleaning methods.
