A 26-year-old Hong Kong man is suspected of being missing in Cambodia, with his last GPS location traced to Svay Rieng Province in the southeast -- the same area where a 17-year-old Hong Kong girl disappeared in early July.
The man, surnamed Ng, initially informed his family via Telegram that he had to work over there, while later sending a troubling message: "I probably won't make it back, save me in 15 days".
Concerned for his safety, Ng's family sought assistance from Hong Kong law enforcement and the Immigration Department, and they noted that no ransom has been requested yet.
Ng traveled to Cambodia with two friends on the night of August 11 and lost contact after boarding a pickup car. His last known location was in Svay Rieng.
The family reported him missing on the evening of August 12. Ng's girlfriend received a WeChat call the next day in which Ng claimed to be safe but spoke in an unnatural manner, raising suspicions of coercion.
Later that evening, Ng's family received a message stating, "Someone is watching me, my phone was taken away, save me in 15 days". Attempts to communicate further were blocked.
The Immigration Department confirmed it has contacted the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia as well as the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in HKSAR to follow up on the case.
The incident came just after a 17-year-old Hong Kong girl, who had earlier lost contact with her family during a trip to Cambodia last month. The investigations revealed that the last signal from the girl's phone was recorded in Svay Rieng, near the border with Vietnam. She was later found reunited with her family.
