Hong Kong saw 1,138 suicide deaths last year, marking the highest number recorded since 2003 and representing a 4 percent increase from the previous year, according to a sobering analysis by the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong.
The suicide prevention organization's examination of Coroner's Court data revealed a disturbing gender disparity, with nearly 67 percent of cases involving men.
Particularly alarming was the significant rise in suicides among males aged 30 to 49 - a demographic facing intense societal, economic and psychological pressures, it said.
Samaritan Befrienders chairman Heymans Wong Hon-chi expressed deep concern about middle-aged men bearing the brunt of Hong Kong's mental health crisis.
"These men typically serve as breadwinners for their families," Wong said. "Last year's challenging economic conditions undoubtedly contributed to their heightened vulnerability."
The organization is urging immediate action to strengthen prevention measures and support services, with particular focus on high-risk groups facing life challenges.
Their recommendations include expanding workplace mental health programs, increasing public education about seeking help, and developing targeted interventions for stressed middle-aged men.
