Police arrested a 13-year-old boy in Mong Kok on suspicion of engaging in the trafficking of dangerous drugs, with confiscated substances estimated to be worth HK$530,000.
It was reported that the suspect, who is currently a secondary form one student, grew up in a single-parent family and lives with his mother.
He does not have any known affiliations with organized crime and is believed to have approached drug dealers via social media platforms in pursuit of quick money.
Police have seized one kilogram of suspected methamphetamine “Ice” and six grams of a suspected mixture of drugs known as “Happy powder” in the boy’s home located on Pak Po Street.
Authorities believed that the suspect hid the drugs above the suspended ceiling in the subdivided unit after collecting them to get HK$4,000 as a reward.
The suspect’s mother is unaware of the crime, and the boy was arrested in the corridor out of his home on Monday.
Wong Tai Sin district’s anti-triad unit inspector Chow Chun-hin warns that drug trafficking is a serious crime and carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a HK$5 million fine and teenagers will not receive mitigated sentencing for being young.
Police also urge young people to never take any drugs and be aware of not to defy the law when looking for part-time jobs during the summer holiday.
