The new year kicks off with the vibrant opening of the new Legislative Council session. The highly anticipated election for the president was both thrilling and intense, with Starry Lee Wai-king ultimately securing the position by a narrow margin. The competition itself was captivating. Amid fierce debates, the candidates' styles were fully revealed, while legislators' questions demonstrated high caliber and sharpness.
With the president's election settled, key "battlegrounds" such as the House Committee and Finance Committee promptly elected their chairs and deputy chairs. The House Committee saw independent legislator Ronick Chan Chun-ying and Junius Ho Kwan-yiu elected as chair and deputy chair, respectively, while the Finance Committee chose Jimmy Ng Wing-ka and Gary Chan Hak-kan. The election of Junius came as a surprise. Known for his consistently forceful and robust debating style, many are now eagerly anticipating how he will preside over meetings and balance voices from all sides.
These outcomes acted like a refreshing breeze, dispelling pre-election concerns about the legislature becoming "dominated by one party." Going forward, I believe there will be active competition for the positions of chairperson of the various committees.
This LegCo appears to have hit the ground running from the start, with every sector brimming with enthusiasm for proactive deliberations.
Regarding the newly elected president Starry Lee, congratulations are accompanied by concern. As a member of the NPC Standing Committee, she will frequently travel between Beijing and Hong Kong. While she expresses full confidence that her roles pose no substantive conflict and that she can manage her time effectively, veteran observers know the president's duties are immense, with meetings back-to-back. Ensuring full attendance at every major session imposes tremendous "perfect attendance" pressure. Reflecting on past presidents' dedication, this gavel is no light burden. However, Starry has always been resolute in her approach. We look forward to her presiding over proceedings with fairness and efficiency. The bell in the chamber has rung – the real show is yet to come.
