A 65-year-old elderly man died after he collapsed during a badminton match at Lam Tin South Sports Center.

The man, Wong, was sent unconscious to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong yesterday, where he was certified dead.

Earlier at 7.48am, Wong was playing badminton with friends at the sports center on Pik Wan Road, Lam Tin, police said.

Wong suddenly felt unwell, falling to the ground.

On seeing him conscious and able to move his limbs on the floor, his friends simply let him take rest instead of reporting to the police immediately.

But shortly afterward, Wong's condition took a turn for the worse as he developed a vigorous seizure and went into coma.

His friends then alerted the sports center's staff, who performed first aid on Wong and reported to the police.

Ambulancemen rushed Wong to United Christian Hospital, where he was certified dead after failed resuscitation attempts.

Police are contacting Wong's family, looking into his medical history and arranging an autopsy of his body to ascertain the cause of death.

A witness recalled Wong being slightly fat and a frequent visitor of the center.

"He had pretty decent badminton skills I feel sad about his sudden death," he said.

In a similar case, on December 5 a 38-year-old man with high blood pressure died after he passed out at a Quarry Bay fitness center where he used to work out.

The man, Cheng, was declared dead at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan the same day.
