For the first time, Hong Kong co-hosted the 15th National Games (NG), the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities (NGD) and the 9th National Special Olympic Games (NSOG) with Guangdong and Macao, marking a major milestone as the city hosted eight events of NG, four events of NGD and NSOG in November and December 2025.
The event carried special significance as Hong Kong participated in co-hosting a major national multi-sport competition for the first time, joining Guangdong and Macao in the first-ever tripartite hosting arrangement.
The State Council of the People's Republic of China officially assigned co-hosting rights to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in August 2021.
The leaders of the three regions received the National Games flag in Shaanxi, confirming the arrangement in the following month.
The Hong Kong SAR Government attached great importance to preparations and established the Hong Kong SAR Organising Committee of the 15th National Games in May 2023 under the Chief Executive's supervision and with the Chief Secretary for Administration as chairperson.
In October 2023, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau set up the National Games Coordination Office (Hong Kong) to manage detailed preparations.
On 11 April 202,4 the organising committees for NG, NGD & NSOG held their inaugural meeting in Guangzhou, where they announced the event dates and the division of competition events among the three places.
Hong Kong hosted eight competition events in the 15th NG: basketball (men's U22), track cycling, fencing, golf, men's handball, rugby sevens, triathlon and beach volleyball, plus the mass participation event - bowling.
For the 12th NGD & 9th NSOG, Hong Kong staged boccia, wheelchair fencing, para table tennis (TT11), Special Olympics table tennis, and the mass participation event - para dance sport.
