Police received a report on Tuesday regarding the mistreatment of an 11-month-old baby and a two-year-old boy by an eight-year-old girl in Hung Hom, and arrested the Pakistani mother of the eight-year-old upon arrival.
This comes after a disturbing video of a young girl of apparent foreign descent repeatedly pushing a baby off a bench onto the floor circulated online Tuesday. The baby landed face first and cried intensely in the video, while the two-year-old boy remained unharmed.
The baby girl was conscious when she was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment by her mother, with bruises on her forehead and legs.
The 37-year-old Pakistani mother of the eight-year-old Indian girl was arrested for ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of child or young person, and was released on bail.
It was understood that the incident happened at "Good Mansion" transitional housing on 9 Hung Lok Road in Hung Hom. The two-year-old boy and 11-month-old girl are believed to be siblings, surnamed Chan. The eight-year-old Indian girl took the siblings outside to play without their mother's knowledge. She then pushed the baby off the bench, causing her injuries.
Nearby residents heard the baby's cries and recorded the incident, sharing it on social media. The video prompted a public outcry, which led the property management staff to report the matter to the police. Upon receiving the report, the police contacted the 8-year-old girl's mother and subsequently arrested her.
Netizens expressed outrage, with many heartbroken by the baby's suffering. Some questioned why the mother would leave the baby with another child, calling the incident intentional rather than accidental. Others admitted being too disturbed to watch the video twice.
