The Drainage Services Department discovered serious damage to a 450-millimeter pressurized sewage pipe along Mills & Chung Path in Southern District during routine inspection on Thursday afternoon, caused by Typhoon Ragasa.
Authorities have immediately suspended the affected pipeline and diverted sewage to emergency treatment facilities at Repulse Bay's main sewage pumping station before ocean discharge. The department urges the public to avoid swimming at Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay beaches or nearby waters to protect health and safety.
Emergency repair works have commenced following the discovery. The department is collaborating with the Environmental Protection Department to collect seawater samples from nearby beaches for testing and water quality monitoring during the repairs. Close coordination with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department ensures timely public updates.
Officials emphasize this is emergency damage resulting from the typhoon and are pursuing full remediation. The public is advised to temporarily avoid contact with affected coastal waters to minimize infection risks.
