While most Hong Kongers taped up windows and stocked supplies for Typhoon Ragasa, the city’s animal lovers united to offer temporary shelters for strays.
Before the issuance of the No. 8 Gale Signal on Tuesday (Sep 23), a group of dedicated volunteers fanned out across various districts to rescue strays, bringing them to local shops that have opened their doors for the vulnerable animals.
Among the compassionate businesses is Rooffie Party, a party room located in Fo Tan and Sha Tin.
The owner, So, announced on social media that the venue would provide shelter for stray cats for three days, along with food to keep them nourished.
In his post, So encouraged the public to contact him and bring any found stray cats to the shop with a cage.
Currently, they have taken in three stray cats, one of which has already been adopted.
In addition to the Rooffie Party, other compassionate businesses have stepped up to offer shelter for strays, which includes Pet Villa HK, a pet hotel with indoor locations in Sai Ying Pun and Ho Man Tin.
Acknowledging concerns about flooding in animal shelters, they encouraged citizens to reach out if they encounter stray cats.
The hotel also ensured that guest pets would be kept separate from strays and invited volunteers to assist in their care.
Meanwhile, online users have compiled a list of businesses offering temporary shelter for strays, including Spirit Muay Thai & Fitness in Tsim Sha Tsui, Full Yin Education Centre in Tai Po, and a yoga studio in Causeway Bay.
Additionally, residents in Lei Yue Mun have also been seen carrying cat carriers in a last-minute effort to ensure strays find safety before the typhoon’s arrival.
