In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force in healthcare worldwide, and Hong Kong is leading the charge in integrating this technology into both clinical and home care settings. The city’s world-class medical infrastructure, combined with cutting-edge AI developments, is positioning Hong Kong as a hub for medical innovation.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, questions arise: Will AI outpace human doctors? Can AI-powered remote eldercare solve the challenges of an aging population? These questions are explored in depth in the seventh episode of the program “AI for Humans” on HOY TV, where real-life case studies reveal how AI is reshaping primary healthcare in Hong Kong.
A key highlight in the program is the visit to the international headquarters of iFLYTEK - Xunfei Healthcare, a subsidiary of the renowned AI and intelligent voice company iFLYTEK. Located in Hong Kong’s Cyberport, iFLYTEK - Xunfei Healthcare is a trailblazer in healthcare AI. Last year, it became the first healthcare AI company to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange’s Main Board. Its AI solutions span over 300 application scenarios, with a portfolio of more than 20 industry-leading models.
The company’s flagship product, the iFLYHealth app, launched this year, provides Hong Kong residents with personalized and accessible health consultation services. Dr Tao Xiaodong, Executive Director of iFLYTEK - Xunfei Healthcare Tech, shared the company’s impressive track record: “In the past eight years, our AI systems have supported approximately 160,000 primary care doctors, delivering over 900 million assisted diagnostic services. I believe that with AI technology and Hong Kong’s data training capabilities, local doctors can better serve the community while advancing international technological progress.”
The launch of the iFLYHealth app, tailored specifically to the needs of Hong Kong’s residents, is expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency, aligning with the city’s goals of becoming a global leader in medical innovation.
As Hong Kong faces an increasingly aging population, the demand for effective eldercare solutions has never been higher. SmartAge Intelligence, a local startup incubated at Cyberport, is spearheading the use of AI in eldercare. The company aims to shift Hong Kong’s healthcare focus from a “treatment-heavy, prevention-light” model to one centered around “prevention-first, early treatment.”
Founder and CEO of SmartAge Intelligence, Jason Or, discussed how AI is being leveraged to monitor the daily habits and health patterns of elderly individuals. “By tracking changes in their routines and health metrics, we can identify risks early on and intervene before issues become critical,” he explained. This proactive approach not only enhances the well-being of the elderly but also provides valuable support to their caregivers, offering peace of mind and reducing the stress of round-the-clock monitoring.

SmartAge’s AI technology collects real-time data that allows caregivers to gain insights into the health status of their loved ones. These insights enable better-informed decisions, ensuring that care is more personalized and timely. As Or pointed out, “It is crucial to understand the needs and concerns of the elderly, ensuring that developed products genuinely address societal challenges and that community resources are utilized effectively.”

Another breakthrough in Hong Kong’s healthcare sector is the development of the Sensing Fusion Platform for Accurate and Smart Dispensing, a collaboration between the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and the Hospital Authority. This platform, currently operational at Tin Shui Wai Hospital (TSWH), is revolutionizing medication management by enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of dispensing processes.
The platform, which covers over 200 medications, uses AI and smart sensing technology to track medication workflows, reducing human error and improving patient safety. Mr Kenny Chan, Chief Director of Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies at ASTRI, introduced this technology: “As a technology R&D institution, our mission is to bring technological applications to life. In this project, we developed a smart sensing and control technology platform.”

Mr Alan Ng, Clinical Stream Coordinator for Pharmacy at New Territories West Cluster, underscored the importance of such collaborations in driving innovation. “We are fortunate that Tin Shui Wai Hospital’s pharmacy can seize this opportunity to collaborate with various stakeholders and institutions to implement different smart projects, improving medication workflows to enhance patient safety and service experiences,” he said.
Hong Kong’s healthcare sector is rapidly adopting AI technologies to address the challenges of a growing and aging population while maintaining high standards of care. With advancements like the iFLYHealth app, SmartAge Intelligence’s eldercare solutions, and the smart dispensing platform at TSWH, the city is well on its way to advance in healthcare innovation.
