Taiwanese songwriter and music producer Yuan Weiren, a key figure behind the success of Mandopop stars Faye Wong and Na Ying, died at the age of 57 on Monday (Feb 2).
The death was confirmed by veteran music executive Eric Chen, who cited a statement from Yuan’s family. Yuan passed away peacefully at his home in Taitung after being bedridden for nearly eight years.
Yuan collapsed in Shanghai in 2018 after a fall that caused a brain hemorrhage. Doctors later discovered a brain tumor during emergency treatment. Although he underwent surgery and returned to Taiwan for recuperation, his condition worsened following a second fall, leaving him in a vegetative state.
In a statement shared by Chen, Yuan’s sister said he “left peacefully” and that the family respected his wishes. She added that he would be buried in Taipei alongside his father, in a place he was familiar with.
Architect of Mandopop’s golden era
Yuan first rose to fame in 1991 as part of the duo Fanren, winning the Golden Melody Award for Best Vocal Group twice. He later moved behind the scenes and became one of the most influential producers in the Chinese-language music industry.
He played a decisive role in Na Ying’s entry into the Taiwan market, producing hits including Conquer, Just a dream and Awaken, and helping her become the first mainland Chinese singer nominated for Best Female Singer at the Golden Melody Awards.
For Faye Wong, Yuan composed the Mandarin version of Stubborn, a song widely regarded as one of her early career-defining works.
He was also an early producer for girl group S.H.E, contributing to their debut-era sound.
Yuan later gained wider public recognition as a judge on talent show One Million Star, where his measured critiques and trademark encouragement — “Jiayou, okay?” — earned him popularity among viewers.
Yuan divorced actress Lu Yuanchi in 2018. Their two children live with their mother.
Tributes have poured in from across the music industry, with many crediting Yuan as a behind-the-scenes force whose work shaped a generation of Mandopop artists.
