The Hong Kong and China Gas Company (0003) has partnered with B Duck, a popular local original character, to launch its debut four-day Towngas Green Flame STEAM Summer Camp, with an aim to educate and inspire the next generation about sustainable development and the energy sector.
Centered on four career themes—engineer, scientist, inventor, and ecologist—the summer camp empowered around 200 students with its innovative program, said the company, better known as Towngas.
Designed for students entering Primary 4 to 6, the camp welcomed participants from the Towngas Green Flame Energy Scientist Program alongside students recruited through open enrollment. Attendees included students from numerous well-known local schools, reflecting the strong interest of Hong Kong’s youth in energy science.
Through real-world case studies shared by industry experts, students were guided to explore the scientific wonders of the environment and energy, igniting their passion for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) fields during the camp.
A closing ceremony then was held, marking the completion of the camp and showcasing the young participants’ innovative projects and learning outcomes.
This initiative adopted a fully subsidized model, enabling more students to access cutting-edge technological knowledge and inspiring innovative thinking, Towngas said.
Bien Wong Chun-cheung, Towngas assistant general manager for ESG, said the gas company actively supports the government’s youth development initiatives and is committed to inspiring the younger generation’s passion for science and innovation.
The camp “provides students with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with industry experts, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives and laying a solid foundation for comprehensive development and a sustainable future,” he said.
In 2023, Towngas established the Green Flame Education Team, which comprises employees who possess specialized engineering or environmental, social and governance (ESG) knowledge.
This team visits schools to deliver informative presentations on topics of future energy and climate change. As supplementary teaching materials, schools are provided with educational resources, including energy-themed learning cards and board games published by Towngas.
The initiative has garnered strong support from principals and teachers, with over 8,000 students participating in the first two academic years alone.
