A world language
French is spoken by more than 300 million people across continents. The OIF, an international organisation of French-speaking countries, comprises 88 member states and governments. As the second most widely learned foreign language after English, French ranks as the fifth most widely spoken language in the world.
It’s also the only language, alongside English, that is taught in every country in the world. France operates the largest international network of cultural institutes, which run French-language courses for learners in the millions.
The language of culture
French is the international language of cooking, fashion, theatre, the visual arts, dance, and architecture. Mastering French allows you to enjoy rich cultural heritage – literary canons, films, and music – in their original language. Notably, French is the language of many revered intellectuals, artists and scholars, including Victor Hugo, Molière, Edith Piaf, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Alain Delon!
A language for travel
One of the world’s top tourist destinations, France attracts more than 87 million visitors a year. A good command of French makes travelling to France so much more rewarding, whilst offering insights into the French way of life. The language skills also come in handy when you visit French-speaking regions worldwide.
A language for higher education
Speaking French opens up opportunities for studying abroad at renowned French universities and business schools, which rank among the top higher education institutions in Europe and the world.
The language of love and reason
French, often called the language of love, is known for its beautiful, rich, and melodious features. Besides, it’s an influential language that structures thought and develops critical thinking, and widely used for discussions and negotiations.
