The 15th National Games of China, jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau in November, offers a strategic opportunity for Hong Kong to test real-name ticketing and stimulate Greater Bay Area tourism and economic growth.
With five million tickets priced between 30 yuan and 800 yuan (HK$32.7 and HK$874.4) going on sale from August 28, this mega event offers the perfect testing ground for a secure, transparent, and consumer-friendly ticketing system while attracting visitors eager to explore Hong Kong.
Real-name ticketing to tackle scalping
Around the world, real-name ticket registration is increasingly used to combat scalping, fraud and fake resale markets.
While Hong Kong has been cautious in adopting it, citing privacy and logistical challenges, the National Games provides the ideal scenario for a large-scale trial.
This should include:
- Identity-based purchasing – Buyers register their full name and ID when purchasing tickets;
- Official resale platform – If buyers can’t attend, resale is only allowed through an approved platform, cutting out scalpers; and
- Family-friendly flexibility – One can register for family members with their details.
Given Hong Kong’s history of ticket scams for concerts and sports events, this trial could shape the future of event ticketing. For public trust, the system must include clear guidelines, fast verification and strong data protection.
Use the event to boost tourism
The National Games can also be leveraged to boost Hong Kong’s tourism, as it offers a major chance for cross-border economic synergy in the Greater Bay Area.
With events spread across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, spectators will naturally travel, benefiting hotels, restaurants, retail, and cultural attractions.
Hong Kong can maximize the impact by:
- Streamlining cross-border travel;
- Improving the schedules of high-speed rail, ferries and buses;
- Simplifying immigration for ticket holders with dedicated lanes or e-clearance;
- Offering sports + tourism packages;
- Collaborating with Macau and Guangdong to offer deals combining event tickets, hotel stays, dining and sightseeing;
- Promoting local experiences; and
- Organizing night markets, cultural performances and shopping festivals to encourage longer stays and higher spending.
This would be a win-win for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
The National Games can not only be a celebration of sports but also a policy testing ground and economic catalyst. By adopting real-name ticketing, Hong Kong can set a precedent for secure, scam-free events. And by embracing tourism partnerships and cross-border integration, it can turn a short-term sporting event into long-term economic momentum.
Hong Kong has the chance to lead in event security innovation and regional tourism growth.
If executed well, the National Games could be remembered not just for athletic achievements, but for transforming how Hong Kong hosts world-class events.
